The Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LADDH) revealed on Friday that 256 Algerian children have been kidnapped since 2014. The organisation pointed out that 15 of the children were killed intentionally, Anadolu has reported.
In a statement issued to mark the 20th anniversary of ratifying the Universal Treaty for Children’s Rights, LADDH described the situation of children in Algeria as “horrible”.
Between January and October 2015, LADDH monitored 5,580 violent incidents against children, including 1,800 sexual assaults. There are, it noted, currently 25,000 Algerian children living on the streets and around 300,000 who are already part of the country’s workforce.
LADDH said that 45,000 children were born illegitimately during the same period of the report. This is unduly high in what is supposed to be a Muslim country.
The organisation has raised the alarm regarding these latest statistics, as the phenomena recorded are spreading across the country. It called on the authorities to consider these problems and take them seriously.
