Egypt rejects international military intervention in Libya

Egypt has reservations regarding the international community’s plans for military intervention in Libya, with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry saying yesterday “this is the mission of the Libyan army and people,” the Anadolu Agency reported.

In a press conference with his Czech counterpart Lubomir Zaoralek in Cairo, Shoukry said: “Eradicating terror in Libya is the mission of the national Libyan army and the national unity government which takes decisions related to reinforcing its abilities.”

Shoukry suggested that Libya reinforces its military abilities in cooperation with neighbouring countries. “Absolutely, this is a Libyan issue which is carried out in cooperation with the international community,” Shoukry said.

“I imagine that the most important issue is the formation of the Libyan government in order to take the appropriate decisions in accordance with the interests of the Libyans themselves.”

“The situation in Libya is worrying and needs to be followed up on closely by Egypt in the context of discussions with regional and international partners. We have always been seeking to contain terror and get rid of it.”

Meanwhile, three Egyptian strategic experts who spoke to Anadolu said they expect international military interference. One of them said this might take place within weeks, starting from Sirte, which is controlled by Daesh.

While one expert expected the military interference could be European and led by the Americans, the
