Libyan scholar calls on unity government and its opponents to reconcile

A member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Libyan scholar Dr Ali Sallabi has called on the Libyan national unity government and its opponents to resort to dialogue and move towards reconciliation.

“Libya needs consensus to save lives and face the difficult security and economic challenges experienced by Libyans,” Sallabi told Quds Press.

“Libya needs inclusion as it faces challenges of extremism, terrorism and even famine,” he added.

Sallabi said the national unity government led by Prime Minister-designate, Fayez Al-Sarraj, represents an important step towards an intra-Libyan dialogue which would “prevent the country from sliding into infighting and prevent outside interference that threatens Libya these days.”

On Wednesday, the UN-backed unity government moved from its base in Tunisia to the Libyan capital Tripoli.

UN envoy to Libya Martin Kobler welcomed the new government saying their arrival is “important for democratic transition in Libya and the path of peace, security and prosperity.”
