The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) has warned of growing violations against the freedom of the press in Tunisia.

SNJT President Naji Al Gauri said there are growing economic and social violations challenging the freedom of the press, but noted that some believe there is a decline in violations.

Gauri made his remarks while presenting the union’s annual report on press freedom on Tuesday coinciding with World Press Freedom Day.

The report included a description of the violations against press freedom by the parliament, government and citizens, as well as by some officials who have called to prosecute journalists.

The report also documented physical violence perpetrated against journalists while they were performing their duties by security and military personnel and called on the authorities to provide more protection for journalists.

Gauri also called for support for Egyptian and Palestinian journalists.
