Grave concern regarding Dr Mohamed Badie's well-being

July 10, 2016 at 12:06 am

The Egyptian Revolutionary Council is extremely concerned about reports of the transfer of Dr Badie, Head of the Muslim Brotherhood, to an intensive care unit from his prison cell. Dr Badie is being held by the Egyptian authorities because of his political dissent. He and other dissidents are held in conditions that all international human rights organisations view as beyond appalling and are subjected to torture, malnutrition, overcrowding and the withholding of medical treatment.

The Egyptian Revolutionary Council holds the Egyptian authorities entirely responsible for the safety and health of Dr Badie, and reminds them and the international community, that this is the man who insisted on peaceful resistance throughout declaring that, “Our peacefulness is stronger than their bullets”.

He insisted on peaceful resistance in front of the military coup that took place three years ago and that ousted the first ever freely elected civilian president in an operation that involved the murder of thousands of unarmed dissidents and the imprisonment of scores of thousands.

In addition, the ERC emphasises that should any harm befall Dr Badie as a result of ill-treatment by the authorities, it would send a clear and unambiguous message to Egyptians and the region as a whole about the value western democracies place on peaceful dissent.
