Turkey submits Israel deal to parliament for approval

August 18, 2016 at 12:38 pm

The Turkish government on Wednesday submitted to parliament a deal to normalise relations with Israel.

The agreement has been forwarded to parliament for ratification before the legislative body goes into summer recess later this month.

According to the agreement, Israel will pay $20 million to the families of the victims of the Mavi Marmara attack within 25 days of the treaty entering into force.

Under the bill, the legal case regarding the Israeli commandos who conducted the attack will also be dropped.

Turkey will also secure the entry of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip through Israeli borders, as well as construct a hospital with a capacity of 200 beds.

In 2010, Israeli marine forces killed 10 Turkish citizens aboard the Mavi Marmara ship after attacking it in international waters while it was on its way to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In June, Turkey and Israel announced that they had reached an agreement to restore ties.
