Turkish Airlines cancels flights to Iraq

Turkish Airlines cancelled its flights to the Iraqi cities of Erbil and Baghdad today following the start of the Battle for Mosul, Dogan news agency reported.

The carrier’s planes were due to take off from Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport heading to Erbil at 6.15pm and another to Baghdad at 5.35pm. They were cancelled after the operation to retake Mosul from daesh was announced late last night.
The airline said passengers to both destinations will be sent via other flights this evening.

Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces last night began an offensive to recapture Mosul from Daesh.

Some 1,500 Turkish-trained forces are taking part in the operation.

Where is Mosul?

Mosul is the second biggest city in Iraq. It is located in the north of the country.

What is happening there?

Since June 2014 it has been under the control of Daesh.

What’s happening now?

Iraqi and Kurdish forces, backed by an international coalition which is led by the US, are battling to recapture the city from Daesh.
