Kuwait to recruit 400 Palestinian teachers

October 18, 2016 at 3:01 pm

Kuwait has promised to recruit 400 teachers from Palestine, Kuwait Times reported this morning.

Palestinian Ambassador to Kuwait Rami Tahboub has announced that Kuwait’s Minister of Higher Education Bader Al-Essa will visit Ramallah in November to sign an agreement to recruit Palestinian teachers from various parts of the academic spectrum.

Speaking at a dinner banquet, Chairman of PalSat TV, Ahmed Assaf, and his accompanying delegation said that the agreement was ready and only needs to be signed. Al-Essa’s visit to Ramallah was postponed because of his tight schedule.

This comes months after Kuwait had agreed to recognise Palestinian employees working in its education sector. Following the Gulf War of 1990-1991, Palestinian citizens have been banned from working in Kuwait’s education sector. Most Palestinians who had alternative passports or a laissez-passer were able to escape this restriction.

The restriction on Palestinian nationals was repealed in May.

Ties between Kuwait and Palestine deteriorated in 1990 when the Palestinian president at the time Yasser Arafat announced his support for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait.
