Hollande: Raqqa may be next target after Mosul

October 21, 2016 at 2:36 pm

French President Francois Hollande warned yesterday that Daesh’s stronghold in Syria, Raqqa, might be the “next target” after regaining control of Iraq’s Mosul in the event that the group flees there.

Speaking at an EU summit in Brussels yesterday, Hollande said: “Regaining control in Mosul in very important, but we can’t afford mistakes in the pursuit of the terrorists who are already leaving Mosul for Raqqa. If we allow dangerous Daesh leaders to flee to Raqqa, then it is safe to say that the next target will be Raqqa.”

In a press conference at the end of the summit’s first day, Hollande said that in the event that an attack is launched on Raqqa, France would support the forces that may be Arab or Kurdish, or may include moderate forces from the opposition.”

France is part of the US-led coalition fight Daesh in both Syria and Iraq.
