Iran, China sign defence cooperation deal

Iran and China have signed a defence and joint military cooperation agreement.

Iranian Defence Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan signed the agreement along with his Chinese counterpart, General Chang Wanquan in Tehran yesterday at the end of an earlier meeting between the two sides.

The Iranian Defence Ministry said the agreement provides for the promotion of defence and military cooperation between the two countries, and the transfer of military expertise, especially in the fight against terrorism and facing elements that threaten the region’s security and stability.

The Iranian defence minister said the agreement aims to support security and stability in the region and the world adding that the Middle East is witnessing a wave of “terrorism” that threatens the region and the rest of the world.

Dehqan added that his country is ready to be part of collective action to counter “terrorism and extremism”, especially the threat of Daesh.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security, Viktor Ozerov, said that Iran is interested in buying Russian military equipment and weapons, including T-90 tanks and artillery systems and helicopters.
