Over 30 members of Libya’s Tobruk-based House of Representatives have suspended their membership in the assembly in protest at a decision by the parliament to postpone the election of a new central bank governor.
Although most of the assembly’s MPs have voted in favour of holding the election, 42 out of 74, the parliament’s second vice-president, Ahmida Huma, the presiding officer of Tuesday’s session, abstained from approving the proposal, according to the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera.
The lawmakers held the president of the parliament and his deputies responsible for what they described as “aggravation of the financial crisis in the country,” as quoted by The Libya Observer.
“We were surprised that the presiding officer changed the course of the scheduled meeting from electing a new governor to delivering speeches and postponement of the election process,” the protesting MPs said in a joint statement on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the assembly decided two weeks ago to elect a new central bank governor, setting 25th April as the election date. The protesting MPs said they would continue to suspend their membership until reforms are made and a central bank governor is elected.
