Sudan’s First Vice President and Prime Minister, Bakri Hassan Saleh, yesterday pledged to end the war in the country’s conflict areas, implement a disarmament plan, and provide guarantees for the opposition.

During a speech to deliver the new national consensus government’s statement, Saleh said the cabinet will work toward mitigating the impact of the global financial and economic crises on the Sudanese economy by diversifying the country’s sources of income and reviewing existing economic laws.

He had named the new cabinet on 12 May, after he was appointed in March as the country’s first prime minister since 1989.
