More than 317,000 properties are built without planning consent and violate the construction code in Egypt, a member of parliament has revealed.

MP for Suez, Abdul Hamid Kamal, cited a technical inspection report prepared by the Ministry of Housing which indicated that more than 357,000 orders have been signed by the governors to remove buildings constructed without permits; however none of them has been implemented.

Kamal noted that a majority of the irregularities are recorded in Alexandria with 57,000 and in the provinces of Dakahlia and Upper Egypt and Canal cities.

Kamal called on the house speaker to call the ministers of housing and local administration to question them over the properties and high rises that might collapse over their residents and which have been built in violation of construction codes.
