Around 50 people were arrested in Tunis last night, including 12 on charges of terrorism, after two police officers were attacked.

According to secretary general of the Union of agents and executives of the district of the national security of Tunis, Tarek Riahi, the mass arrests took place after a man stabbed two traffic police officers in Bardo square yesterday.

“For us, this campaign is successful considering the number of people arrested,” added Riahi.

The man attacked the police officers in front of the Assembly of People’s Representatives, wounding them seriously in the neck. According to the Interior Ministry, over the last three years, the attacker had called all security agents “tyrants” and that killing them was “Jihad”.

According to several media sources, the assailant was born in 1992 and was known as “Zied Abu Zied” and did not have a criminal record.

The police conducted a raid of his home and found a list of MPs with their addresses as well as the names of maintenance officers of the Assembly of People’s Representatives and their schedules.

Various unions in Tunisia have called for greater laws protecting security agents in the countries from similar attacks.
