The son of Field Marshal and General Commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar has reportedly signed a six-month contract worth $120,000 for a US organisation to lobby in the US on behalf of his father.

Khaled Haftar signed the contract last week with Washington lobbyist Daniel Faraci from Grassroots Political Consulting. The contract is attached to the Foreign Agents Registration Unit (FARA) which was submitted by Faraci.

In the contract, Grassroots will “provide political and strategic advocacy in the US Congress” on behalf of the Haftar family as well as giving “political, strategic [and] business guidance to General Haftar”.

The contract further adds that “support will be sought for the role of the Hifter [sic] family in the future political, military and strategic interests of Libya.”

Khaled is described as a “captain who serves under the command and direction of the Commander and Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), General Khalifa Haftar.”

Khalifa Haftar was based in the United States for a number of years after he and his fellow officers attempted to overthrow then President Muammar Gaddafi. He was released in 1990 in a deal with the US government and spent nearly two decades in Virginia until 2011 when he returned to Libya after Gaddafi was overthrown and eventually killed during uprisings.
