The European Union (EU) supports efforts being made by Kuwait to mediate a solution to the current Gulf crisis, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Frederica Mogherini said yesterday.

Mogherini called for “dialogue” between all Gulf countries involved in the rift.

“The unity of the Gulf would not only serve the security and stability of the region, but it serves the overall interests of the international community,” the EU official stressed.

On 5 June 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut off diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar in June on allegations that it supports terrorism. Qatar denies the accusations.

Since then, Kuwait has been leading mediation efforts to heal the year-long rift but has been unable to achieve a breakthrough.
