US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo yesterday called on Saudi Arabia to support a “thorough investigation” into the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Reuters reported.

In a statement, Pompeo said: “We have seen contradicting reports about the safety and whereabouts of prominent Saudi journalist and contributor in the Washington Post Jamal Khashoggi.”

Pompeo also said in the statement: “State Department senior officials have spoken with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through diplomatic channels about this matter.”

He added: “We call on the government of Saudi Arabia to support a thorough investigation of Mr. Khashoggi’s disappearance and to be transparent about the results of that investigation.”

US President Donald Trump has said he was “concerned” about Khashoggi’s disappearance.

Speaking to Reuters, he said: “Right now, nobody knows anything about it, but there are some pretty bad stories going around. I do not like it.”
