Indonesian President Joko Widodo has stressed the need to stop the Israeli violations against defenseless Palestinians and to resolve the Palestinian issue in a fair and lasting manner in accordance with international law and humanitarian law.

Widodo made the remarks during a meeting in Jakarta with Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki which was also attended by Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

The Indonesian president also stressed his country’s readiness to help and mobilise support through all Islamic, regional and international forums to help the Palestinian people, especially as Indonesia will become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council next year, and Palestine will chair the Group of 77.

Widodo said it was unacceptable for Palestinian suffering to continue adding that the solution should be political and that the Palestinian people have the right to live in freedom and dignity and to have a sovereign state within the 1967 borders.

The Indonesian president has also praised Palestine’s support and assistance to Indonesia through the Palestinian Agency for International Cooperation (PICA) following the earthquake and tsunami that hit Sulawesi Island earlier this month.
