December 20, 2018 at 2:06 pm

An Egyptian criminal court yesterday sentenced three police officers who work at Cairo International Airport and four other airport workers to 15 years in jail for receiving bribes in return for facilitating the smuggling of funds outside of Egypt.

Egypt’s prosecutor-general referred the seven airport staff to the Cairo Criminal Court on charges of requesting, receiving and offering bribes.

The defendants facilitated the smuggling of funds outside of the country repeatedly and frequently, allowing traffickers to leave the airport’s security checkpoints undetected, according to prosecutors.

The defendants confessed to the offences, prosecutors added.

A businessman and the owner of a currency exchange bureau who are accused of smuggling money outside of Egypt via Cairo Airport in collaboration with the accused officers and airport workers were also questioned.
