Egypt jails security officer for ‘assaulting journalists’

December 20, 2018 at 9:33 am

A court yesterday jailed a security officer at the Egyptian Pharmacist Syndicate (EPS) for four days pending investigations over “beating journalists and causing them injuries and bruises”.

The defendant is due to appear before the court today when his detention is expected to be renewed.

On Monday, EPS’ security officers attacked a number of the syndicate’s journalists while they were covering the election of the body’s chief.

A number of journalists and rights lawyers later filed complaints against EPS’ current manager and security officers. The prosecution was reported to have heard evidence from the victims and defendant and have watched surveillance footage from the scene before arresting jailing the security officer.
