The Israeli army yesterday deployed the Iron Dome missile defence system in Tel Aviv amid growing tension on the northern border with Lebanon and Syria, local media reported.

The army also deployed the system in southern Israel in anticipation of any tension with the Gaza Strip.

Tension with Gaza rose earlier this week after Israeli warplanes bombed areas inside the besieged Strip, killing a Palestinian and wounding others, while an Israeli soldier was shot in the head by a Palestinian sniper.

In retaliation, Israel froze the transfer of Qatari funds to the besieged Gaza Strip.

Syria and Iran have recently threatened to bomb targets deep inside Israel in response to Israeli attacks in Syria earlier this week.
