Ali Akbar Velayati, the senior advisor for foreign affairs to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, yesterday criticised US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

Velayati described Trump’s decision “as a violation of international law and Syrian sovereignty and will further complicate the situation and increase hatred, anger and suffering of the region’s people.”

The Iranian official said the US president’s position aims to provide direct support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the upcoming elections.

Velayati called on people and countries around the world to address the US’ arrogance and unilateralism by providing comprehensive support for Syria’s sovereignty of the occupied Golan Heights.

Last week Trump tweeted that “it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights”, in violation of international law.

He is expected to sign an order recognising Israel’s sovereignty today.
