UK hosts second conference for Palestinian medical teams

Palestinian medical workers in the UK took part in the 2nd Palestinian Physicians Association in Britain (PALMED) in Manchester

Palestinian medical workers in the UK took part in the second Palestinian Physicians’ Association in Britain (PALMED) in Manchester on Saturday.

Help at the Manchester Metropolitan University, PALMED welcomed a range of attendees including supporters of the Palestinian cause.

Speaking at the event, founder of Medical Aid for Palestinians, Dr Swee Chai Ang, highlighted the situation of the medical field in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip and further afield in the refugee camps in the diaspora.

Dr Nick Maynard, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist at Oxford University Hospital, who works to develop clinical skills for medical students in Gaza, spoke of his admiration for the outstanding scientific level of Palestinian medical students, which he compared to the level of his students in Oxford.

Attendees also discussed providing medical care in areas of conflict and training surgeons to deal with war injuries. Dr Ammar Darwish of the David Net Foundation praised the professionalism of ambulance crews and emergency services at Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital.
