Iraq thwarts Daesh attack, arrests 9 militants

The Iraqi security authorities have thwarted a planned attack by Daesh and arrested nine of the group’s militants in separate areas of the country, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defence announced in a statement that its forces had thwarted a Daesh attack against the judges of the Kirkuk Governorate Investigation Court.

The ministry explained that after arresting one of the group’s militants in the governorate, he confessed to planning to target the court’s judges.

The Iraqi ministry added that the Iraqi security services had arrested three terrorists, two in Anbar Governorate (west) and another in Kirkuk.

Meanwhile, the Nineveh Governorate Police revealed in a statement that they had arrested five Daesh militants who held different positions within Daesh during its control over the city of Mosul from 2014 to 2017.

On Sunday, the Military Intelligence Directorate announced the launching of military operations against the organisation’s strongholds in the provinces of Diyala (east) and Salah Al-Din (north).

The directorate disclosed in a statement that the operations resulted in seizing various quantities of improvised explosive devices and mortar shells.
