Israel has lodged an official complaint on Friday with the United Nations (UN) Security Council against Lebanon, over a rocket attack launched from Lebanese territory targeting Israeli sites.

This came in two identical letters submitted by Israel’s representative to the UN Gilad Erdan, to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and President of the Security Council TS Tirumurti.

“It is clear that Hezbollah and other terrorist organisations are trying to divert attention from their active role in drawing Lebanon in the current crisis by attacking Israeli civilians,” Erdan stated in the letters.

He condemned: “The firing of rockets this week from Lebanon towards Israel, which violates UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”

Gantz: ‘We do not intend to let Hezbollah toy with us’

Erdan stated: “This week’s attack has been added to a series of terrorist attacks and rocket firing from Lebanon towards Israel in the past three months, in an unacceptable situation that could undermine the stability of the region.”

“The recent attacks and the growing tensions in the region, exacerbated by Iran’s activities and its attempt to arm its allies, especially Hezbollah, once again demonstrate the urgent need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” Erdan asserted.

Resolution 1701, adopted by the UN Security Council in August 2006, called for ending all hostilities between Lebanon and Israel, following the outbreak of confrontations between the two sides in July of the same year.

The Israeli diplomat urged the UN Security Council to unequivocally condemn these grave violations and demanded considering the recent aggression during the next deliberations on Security Council Resolution 1701.

He stressed that the actions of Hezbollah and other terrorist organisations, as well as the failure of the Lebanese government to prevent these practices, would stir up chaos and destruction in Lebanon.

“While Israel is not interested in escalation, we will not allow attacks on Israeli civilians,” the Israeli official expressed, noting that: “Israel will have no choice but to respond and dismantle Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure that threatens Israel’s security and the lives of its citizens.”

Earlier on Friday, Hezbollah announced its responsibility for firing missiles at “open lands in the vicinity of the Israeli occupation sites in the Shebaa Farms,” in response to the Israeli airstrikes on open locations in Lebanon on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army Spokesperson Avichay Adraee confirmed: “Hezbollah fired 19 rockets from the north of Shebaa, three of which landed inside Lebanon and six other missiles in open areas without causing any casualties,” adding that ten shells were intercepted.
