Jordan’s unemployment fell to 23.2 per cent during the third quarter of this year, marking a 1.6 per cent decline compared to the quarter before, the planning minister announced yesterday.

Nasser Shraideh told parliament that the kingdom’s unemployment among young people had  declined to “44.9 per cent in the third quarter of the current year, compared to the 48.5 per cent recorded in the second quarter.”

During the second quarter of the year, Jordan’s unemployment reached 24.8 per cent, marking a decline of 0.2 per cent compared to the quarter before, and a 1.9 per cent increase compared to the same period of 2020.

Shraideh pointed out that unemployment amongst males had reached 22.7 per cent during the second quarter of 2021, while it stood at 33.1 per cent among females. “It is clear that male unemployment has increased by 1.2 per cent and female by 4.5 percent compared to the second quarter of last year,” the minister explained.

Jordan’s economy has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent global closures which have reduced tourist numbers to the kingdom and thus foreign currency incomes.
