Egypt’s national karate team held the Palestinian flag as they accepted medals for first and second place at the International Championship, the Trbovlje open, in Slovenia.

The Israeli player, who came third, raised the Israeli flag at the same time.

Support for Palestine is common during sporting competitions across the world. In 2019 a football fan was arrested during a match at Cairo International Stadium after he raised the Palestinian flag in support of people living under occupation.

At the same game, players also expressed solidarity with Palestinians by covering one eye in support of Muath Amarneh, a Palestinian photographer who lost an eye after being shot by Israeli soldiers whilst covering a demonstration.

Last year, the Algerian national team raised Palestinian flags after beating Morocco at the semi-finals of the FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar.

Also last year, after a match against Chelsea, Leicester City football player Hamza Choudhury draped the Palestinian flag over his shoulders as he collected his winner’s medal.

In April this year the English Forest Green Rovers Football Club flew the Palestinian flag during a game against Oldham Athletic in solidarity with Palestine.
