Hamas chief outlines context and objectives of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood

In a televised speech, the head of Hamas’ Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh has said the resistance’s actions have been “a great victory and a dazzling triumph”.

Outlining the context and objects of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, Haniyeh continued: “We warned the world about this fascist government [in Israel], which has let the settlers and usurpers loose to sow corruption in the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque in Al-Quds.

We told them, “Don’t play with fire”. We told them, “Don’t cross the red line.” But they plugged their ears and closed their eyes [to our warnings].”

“They desecrated and defiled it. They molested our women. They entered with their shoes up to the mihrab and minbar [features inside the mosque].”

Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners and their unending detention for decades, was also highlighted, along with “the intensifying colonisation of the West Bank” with the aim of Judaising the area and annexing it.

“How many times have we warned them about the unjust blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, which has led to all this human suffering?”

According to a statement, Iran’s UN mission said: “The resolute measures taken by Palestine constitute a wholly legitimate defense against seven decades of oppressive occupation and heinous crimes committed by the illegitimate Zionist regime.”

“We emphatically stand in unflinching support of Palestine; however, we are not involved in Palestine’s response, as it is taken solely by Palestine itself,” the statement insisted.

Israel expert: Are we allowed to be arrogant without paying a price?

Israeli journalist Gideon Levy said in an article in Haaretz newspaper that Israel’s arrogance is behind everything that has happened, adding that the Israelis thought they were allowed to do anything and that they wouldn’t pay a price or be punished for it.

“We build a huge barrier around the Gaza Strip; its underground structure cost 3 billion shekels ($766 million) and we will be safe. We rely on the geniuses of Unit 8200 and the Shin Bet agents who know everything and will warn us at the right time. We move half the army from the Gaza enclave to the Huwara enclave just to secure the settlers’ Sukkot celebrations, and everything will be fine, whether in Huwara or Erez. Then it turns out that a primitive, ancient bulldozer can break through even the most complex and expensive obstacles in the world with relative ease, when there is a great incentive to do so.”

Operation Al-Aqsa Flood derails normalisation efforts between Israel, Saudi Arabia

The sudden attack launched by Hamas against Israel from the Gaza Strip refocused attention on the Palestinian issue and dealt a blow to the momentum gained in recent months by the American effort to reach a normalisation agreement between the occupation state and Saudi Arabia.

Brian Katulis, vice president for policy at the Middle East Institute in Washington, said that such an agreement “was always a tough hill to climb, and that hill just got a lot steeper.”

He believes that the war highlights the disputes between Israel and the Palestinians and “makes it harder to sweep those complicated issues under the rug the way the 2020 Abraham Accords did,” referring to normalisation between Israel and the UAEBahrain and Morocco.

After the escalation on Saturday, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it “had been warning of an explosive situation as a result of the continued occupation and deprivation of the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights.”

An American official said it was “premature” to discuss the events’ effect on normalisation talks. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal Bin Farhan, this by telephone.

Joint Statement by Harvard Palestine Solidarity Groups on the Situation in Palestine

Harvard Palestine Solidarity Groups ‘hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence,’ they said in a statement released on 7 October 2023.

Today’s events did not occur in a vacuum. For the last two decades, millions of Palestinians in Gaza have been forced to live in an open-air prison. Israeli officials promise to “open the gates of hell,” and the massacres in Gaza have already commenced. Palestinians in Gaza have no shelters for refuge and nowhere to escape. The apartheid regime is the only one to blame.

The signatories include Amnesty International at Harvard, Harvard Middle Eastern and North African Law Student Association, Harvard Islamic Society, Harvard Jews for Liberation, Harvard Prison Divest Coalition and Sikhs and Companions of Harvard Undergraduates among others.

Israel expert: Israel lost with the opening blow from the resistance

“Whatever Israel does from this point onward is meaningless. Even if it finds Mohammed Deif in his bunker and brings him to trial in the people’s court. As in the Yom Kippur War, the loss came with the opening blow. The rest are stories for historians.

Settlers posted on their social media the Palestinian fighters wandering in the streets of the Israeli settlements and opening fire at certain targets.

The website of Al Qassam Brigades published a picture of a dozen detained Israeli occupation troops with their hands tied behind their backs.

Israeli media reported that Hamas fighters, who surprised them with the attack, could enter the settlement of Sderot without resistance by the Israeli army.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has declared an emergency situation within a range of 80 kilometres from the Gaza Strip, his office says.

The “special situation” allows the military’s Home Front Command to restrict gatherings and close off areas, including the major cities Tel Aviv and Beersheba, his office said.
