As many as 703 people crossed the English Channel on eleven small boats on Sunday, the highest number since the Labour Party came to power last month, and the third highest this year, according to the Home Office. The government department said that 1,172 migrants in 20 small boats in total arrived in the UK last week.
The highest number on a single day in 2024 was on 18 June, when 882 people crossed the channel, with 711 on 1 May being the second highest.
On Sunday, two people were found dead after a boat carrying migrants tried to cross the English Channel from near the French port of Calais.
More than 18,300 migrants have arrived in the UK in small boats this year. Nearly 30,000 people entered the UK in this way in 2023.
