The Sudanese authorities announced yesterday that the death toll from the cholera epidemic has risen from 252 to 315, while the death toll from floods and heavy rains has risen from 212 to 225. According to the Ministry of Health, there have now been 9,533 registered cases of cholera since the epidemic was declared on 12 August.
At least 889 people have been injured due to flooding after heavy rains in Sudan since June, it added. A total of 345,204 people from 73,229 families have been affected by floods. Moreover, said the ministry, “35,794 homes have collapsed completely, and 40,781 homes have been partially damaged.”
On Sunday, the International Organisation for Migration announced the displacement of about 6,000 Sudanese within a week, bringing the total number of displaced people due to floods and heavy rains to more than 178,000. Annual rainfall in Sudan generally occurs from early June until October.
