The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, yesterday condemned the Israeli army’s targeting of a hospital courtyard and a school in central Gaza, both sheltering displaced people.
In a post on his account on X, Borrell said: “I condemn new IDF strikes on a hospital & a school serving as shelters in central Gaza. Dozens of civilians seeking safety were killed & injured in dreadful circumstances.”
Borrell added that the bombing resulted in the death and injury of dozens of civilians seeking safety in horrific conditions.
Videos circulating online showed Palestinians being burnt to death as a result of the fires that resulted from the strike.
He emphasised that “mass evacuation orders, violations of international humanitarian law, and disregard for civilian casualties will not make Israelis safer.”

On Sunday night into Monday, 22 Palestinians, including 15 children and a woman, were killed, and around 80 others were injured when the Israeli army bombed a school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. This brings the number of shelters targeted by Israel since October 2023 to 191. Later, displaced civilians at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir Al-Balah were also targeted.
