Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed yesterday that Tehran would consider sending troops to Syria if Damascus requested such help.

“If the Syrian government requests Iran to send troops to Syria, we will study the request,” Araghchi told the Arabic TV station in response to a question about the opposition factions’ offensive against government forces in northern Syria.

He warned that the spread of what he referred to as “terrorist groups” in Syria “may harm Syria’s neighbouring countries more than Iran.” He went on to name Iraq, Jordan and Turkiye as countries that “are affected by developments inside Syria faster than others, and if terrorism spreads in them, these three countries will face a threat due to their long borders with Syria.”

Last week, opposition fighters gained control of Syria’s northern city of Aleppo and have since edged forward towards Hamas and Idlib.
