The ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah group is on the verge of collapse, Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom reported yesterday.
The paper said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with Defence Minister Israel Katz, heads of the coalition government, and senior members of the security establishment to discuss the situation in Lebanon.
The paper quoted security officials as saying that the Israeli occupation army’s withdrawal from Lebanon is taking place at a measured pace, while maintaining a security buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
Katz has previously threatened to terminate the ceasefire agreement if Hezbollah did not implement two basic conditions that guarantee Israel’s security.
The defence minister claimed that “Israel is interested in implementing the agreement in Lebanon and will continue to implement it fully without concessions to ensure the safe return of settlers to the north.”
The ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel went into effect on 27 November. Under the terms of the deal, the Israeli occupation army was to withdraw from southern Lebanon within 60 days, in exchange for Hezbollah’s complete withdrawal to the are north of the Litani River.
