More than 125,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their country following the ousting of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Syria announced.
The announcement was made in a post by Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, the UNHCR representative in Syria, on X yesterday.
Vargas Llosa stated: “More than 125,000 refugees have gone back to Syria since the fall of Assad on 8th December.”
More than 125,000 refugees have gone back to Syria since the fall of Assad on 8th December. They did – and continue to do so, daily – full of hope after years in exile.

He added that Syrians returned with renewed hope after spending years in exile.
Vargas Llosa also highlighted the importance of implementing steps related to “reconstruction” in Syria, which is a key item on the international community’s agenda.
On 8 December 2024, Syrian factions took control of the country, bringing an end to Bashar Al-Assad’s regime. This marked the conclusion of 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family dominance.
