The United States’ President Donald Trump has accused South Africa of “confiscating land” and oppressing its white population, after the country joined and gave its support to a group of nations advocating against Israel’s Occupation of the Palestinian Territories and its violations of international law.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, US President Trump claimed that “South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY”, seemingly referring to the country’s white population.

“A massive Human Rights VIOLATION, at a minimum, is happening for all to see. The United States won’t stand for it, we will act.” He also announced that “I will be cutting off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed!”

Trump’s accusations were apparently based on the allegation – long-espoused by far-right figures and parties throughout the West – that the South African government is marginalising and suppressing white people within the country, as well as favouring the black majority in what such claims label a ‘genocide’.

Those allegations were particularly fuelled recently by a bill signed into law by South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, giving the government power to take possession of land without financial compensation, with the apparent aim to compensate for decades of white minority rule in the country under its former apartheid regime.

Trump’s remarks and measures, however, notably come after South Africa last week joined the ‘Hague Group’ – an international political organisation which aims to coordinate legal, diplomatic and economic measures against Israel’s violations of international law.

That sentiment amongst part of the US’s political class in favour of Trump’s decision was expressed by some such as US congressman, Joe Wilson, who stated on X that “South Africa aligns itself with Iranian terrorists, harassing Jewish civilians, while pretending to be a major world power. Cutting off South Africa is long overdue. Trump will fix it.”
