Israeli Channel 14 reported on Wednesday evening that a delegation from Israel will soon visit several countries to study the “optimal way” to carry out the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners accused by Tel Aviv of planning or carrying out attacks against the state.
The private broadcaster said a delegation, from the Ministry of National Security, headed by Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir along with representatives from Israel’s Prison Service, will travel to several nations that still apply capital punishment, such as the United States.
Its purpose is to examine how best to impose the death penalty, to learn from counterparts how the law is applied, and to identify the proper method for carrying out the sentence.
Among the methods under consideration are lethal injection, the electric chair, and other options, according to the channel.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israel’s Knesset Security Committee discussed preparations to advance a law enabling the execution of Palestinian prisoners, ahead of its second and third readings.
A principles document submitted by the committee chairman, Zvika Vogel, of the Otzma Yehudit party, proposes that executions take place within 90 days of a court ruling, with no right of appeal for anyone convicted of killing a Jew “simply because they are Jewish, including the planner or the sender.” According to the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz, the proposals also state that the Prison Service would carry out the executions by lethal injection.
