European institutions look into UAE human rights record

January 31, 2014 at 12:13 am

European NGOs are looking into the human rights situation in the United Arab Emirates, especially the withdrawal of citizenship from UAE nationals and reported punitive measures taken against would-be reformers. A consultation was held in Brussels for this purpose on Tuesday.

NGO representatives tackled an agenda which included the closure of civil society organisations and other human rights violations in the Emirates, as well as the citizenship issue. It was agreed that the situation will be monitored closely and the issues will be raised with the European Parliament and its relevant specialist committees.

It was noted that, “The verification of respect for civil rights by the partners of the European Union across the world should take priority over any economic interests.”
