Egyptian commerce syndicate boycotts Turkey

February 7, 2014 at 2:50 pm

The General Union for the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce announced on Tuesday that it is suspending all official relations with Turkey in protest of what they are calling Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s “harmful comments” against the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar.

The web site Aswat Masriyya is reporting that Erdogan must officially apologise to Egyptians for his remarks about the Grand Sheikh as a condition to resume relations.

Erdogan had criticised the Grand Sheikh for his support of the military coup in Egypt. Among the region’s leaders, so far Erdogan has taken the strongest position against the military coup in Egypt.
