Sabahi to support Al-Sisi if he runs for presidency

February 7, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Former Egyptian presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi said on Wednesday that he would support General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi if he ran for presidency because he has become a “popular hero.” Al-Sisi carried out the military coup in July.

Speaking to the talk show “The End of the Day” on Al-Nahar TV, a local Egyptian station, Sabahi said that Al-Sisi has told the media that he would not run for presidency, and he said, “I trust him.”

He continued: “I trust the ability of the youth to express the demands of the revolution, and I am convinced that only one revolutionary candidate must run for the presidency.”

Calling for the revolutionary forces to unite, Sabahi said that the responsibility in Egypt has now become an “ordeal”. He also called for the forces to agree upon one candidate for presidency and one programme.

Criticising the current government for not recognising that the people are the source of power, he stated that now is not the time “to speak about politics. It is the time to build up the institutions of the state. The current government does not recognise the fact that the people are the source of power.”
