Number of Palestinian refugees in Jordan increasing

February 11, 2014 at 2:13 pm

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced on Thursday that 8,833 Palestinian refugees have fled the camps in Syria and are now living in Jordan.

UNRWA announced this number in a statement published on its website, but an employee working at the agency doubted the figure.

The employee, who preferred to stay anonymous, told United Press International that the number of Palestinian refugees in Jordan is greater.

High Commissioner of UNRWA Filippo Grandi announced last month that he was discussing the issue of Palestinian refugees in Jordan with the Jordanian Foreign Minister, Nasser Judeh.

Grandi said that there are increasing fears about the safety of Palestinian refugees in the region as they are being seen as a threat to domestic security wherever they go.
