Veteran Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi has called on the United States to change its policies in the region if it wants to influence Palestinian public opinion. The senior member of the PLO’s Executive Committee made her comments during a meeting with the political head of the US Consulate in Jerusalem, Rick Waters, on Wednesday. She affirmed the continuation of genuine efforts by the Palestinian Authority on the issue of UN membership for an independent state of Palestine, and noted that the PA is keeping all options open.
The key, said Ashrawi, is for America to end “its bias towards Israel” and exert pressure on Tel Aviv to stick to international law and halt illegal settlement activity. This is the best way, she added, to restore US-Palestinian relations and influence public opinion.
