Egypt thwarts gas pipeline sabotage

February 17, 2014 at 11:14 pm

Egyptian media sources have reported that the army and police forces have thwarted an attempt to sabotage the natural gas pipeline from Egypt to Israel. According to the reports, a security patrol stopped a vehicle carrying Palestinians near the natural gas plant in the North Sinai region.

Acting on a tip-off, said Security Chief General Sael Al-Masry, police and army officers chased a car which was being driven suspiciously; when it was stopped two men escaped but the driver, a resident of El-Arish, was caught. The driver claimed that two Palestinians not known to him had asked him to take them close to the natural gas plant. The local police authorities say that they found two passports belonging to the Palestinian suspects.

The gas pipeline in El-Arish was bombed on 27 September by unknown saboteurs; it was the sixth such incident since February.
