The Islamic University of Gaza yesterday awarded an honorary doctorate to the American linguist and thinker Noam Chomsky. The world renowned figure has been attending a linguistic conference in the Gaza. Prof Chomsky told students that the Israeli war of 2008-09 on the territory had decisively changed the balance of world public opinion in favour of the Palestinian people.
More people have become better informed of what is happening on the ground in Palestine, he said. This shift in public opinion had enhanced the work of the international solidarity movement. Hundreds of students turned out at the Islamic University to welcome their distinguished guest and his visiting delegation. Prof Chomsky also met with a number of civil society leaders and government officials, including Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, who thanked him for his outstanding support.
