Egypt supports Palestinian conditions for the resumption of negotiations with Israel

February 20, 2014 at 3:34 pm

Egypt’s Foreign Minister has confirmed that his country supports the Palestinian Authority’s conditions for the resumption of negotiations with the Israeli government based on “clear parameters and an end to settlement building and expansion”. Negotiations, said Mohamed Amr, must also have a clear time-frame and international sponsorship.

Mr Amr met with PLO Executive Committee member Saeb Erekat and the Palestinian delegate at the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Riyad Mansour. The two men were visiting Egypt at the request of PA President Mahmoud Abbas. The agenda for the meeting covered all aspects of the UN bid for recognition of an independent Palestinian state.

“Egypt,” said a Foreign Ministry statement, “supports the choices of its Palestinian brothers, and understands completely the motives behind the UN move, especially given that all parties realise that Israel is not sincere about engaging in a real political process aimed at achieving a final agreement based on the two-state solution.”
