The state of Israel has filed a legal case against a young Egyptian who tore down the Israeli flag from the embassy in Cairo. According to an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official, Ahmed Al Shahat has been accused of a “blatant affront to the state of Israel” and its dignity.

Media sources say that the Israeli ambassador in Cairo has filed the case which also stresses the serious breach of security at the embassy. The Israelis are demanding the immediate prosecution of Al Shahat.

In a related incident, Egyptian activists have organized a Ramadan fast-breaking meal and rally outside the home of the Israeli ambassador in the Maadi district of the Egyptian capital. The demonstrators called for the ambassador’s immediate departure from Egypt.

The organizers of the iftar and rally said that the objective was to reiterate the message to the Israeli ambassador that the Egyptian people do not want him in their country. It is also, they said, a message to the Egyptian government to cut relations with Israel, especially following the deaths of five Egyptian soldiers at the Egypt-Israel border on 18th August.
