Palestinian Mufti: Settlers pushing the region towards a "religious war"

February 20, 2014 at 3:30 pm

The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine, Mohammed Hussein, has warned of an impending  “religious war” in the region. This is likely to be ignited by the provocative practices of the Jewish settlers which are on the rise; the most recent example of which was settlers setting fire to a mosque in the town of Beit Fajar in Bethlehem in the southern West Bank.

During an inspection visit to the accident site on Monday (October 4), Hussein pointed out that the settlers’ attacks are “not absurd; even being planned by the occupation authorities and carried out under their protection”. He added that these violations, in addition to the policy of arrests, land confiscation and the demolition of Palestinian citizens houses, are “part of an ethnic- cleansing process”.

The Mufti of Palestine appealed to the emergency Arab summit, Islamic countries, and popular local and international agencies and organisations, to shoulder their responsibilities in order to stop the Israeli aggression and to protect the Palestinian people, their sanctities and territories from attacks by settlers, who “corrupt the land with no fear”.
