Palestinian workers' syndicate denies support for any premiership candidate

February 20, 2014 at 3:33 pm

The Palestinian Syndicate for Public Sector Workers, which has thousands of public sector employees in its membership, has denied that it is supporting any candidate for the premiership of the national unity cabinet soon to be formed. The syndicate’s Deputy Head said that media claims that the syndicate was backing Salam Fayyad for the role are inaccurate.

A press release issued by Moein Insawy said that the media story should have highlighted that the views it contained were those of personal members of the syndicate, not official policy: “Personal opinions should not have been presented as those representing all public sector employees.”

In any case, added Mr Insawy, the appointment of a prime minister is “primarily the responsibility of the President, after consulting the national groups”. He criticised the media’s professionalism for publishing the story in such a misleading way.
