The Misrata Court of Appeals sentenced on Monday the former Grand Mufti of Libya, Mohamed Madani Shweref, to seven years in prison and a fine of 500 Libyan dinars, also ordering all his civil rights to be suspended for eight years.

Shweref served as Libya’s Grand Mufti during the Qaddafi era and was accused of spreading false news during the 17 February revolution.

The former Mufti was cleared of two other charges: the first relating to carrying out actions in order to incite a civil war during the revolution, and the other to committing actions that would have caused the random killing of innocent people.

Meanwhile, the court sentenced another 13 figures also affiliated with the Qaddafi regime. The verdicts ranged from three years to life sentences in prison for convictions relating to committing crimes during the revolution. Three others were cleared of all charges.
