Sabahi: Atmosphere in Egypt harmful to democracy

May 30, 2014 at 10:07 am

Egypt’s leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi yesterday conceded defeat in the country’s presidential election after preliminary results revealed that former army chief Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi achieved a landslide victory.

“I concede defeat in this presidential election,” Sabahi said. “I lost the election but I won my respect for myself. I went through the battle of the election in an atmosphere that is harmful for democracy and despite the bias and the unfairness of the media and the state’s institutions.

“The democratic scene was marred by violations and partiality.

“The announced turnout figure does not reflect respect for Egyptians’ intelligence,” he added.

“For the sake of Egypt, I accept these final results despite all these flaws. The authorities currently in power have ruined the people’s happiness over the democratic scene.”
