US: Syria will be unstable as long as Assad remains in office

Deputy US Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Michele J. Sison yesterday accused the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad of being the root cause of all the problems in the country, including the emergence of the Islamic State (ISIS) organisation, stressing that Syria will remain unstable as long as he remains in office, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Speaking during a UN Security Council meeting, Sison added: “The humanitarian situation is grim as it is, where ten million Syrians suffer from food insecurity and 11 million need clean water at a time when ISIS terrorism undermines humanitarian access to those affected by the crisis.”

Real and long-term stability in Syria will not be achieved if President Bashar Al-Assad continued in office, she said.

Sison confirmed her country’s support for the Secretary-General’s envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura’s efforts, noting that her country will continue to work with its international partners to defeat ISIS in both Syria and Iraq.
